Low on Sauce at Todd’s Cookhouse Bar-B-Que

June 2nd, 2011 Tweet Facebook Digg Stumble Reddit

Looks like brisket.

In the small town of Oakhurst, just miles from Yosemite National Park, there is but one BBQ joint, and it goes by the name of Todd’s Cookhouse Bar-B-Que.  Todd’s is one of your old-fashioned order at the counter type of BBQ places and the menu is quite staggering for being up in a small town of the Sierra Nevada.  From sandwiches to wings to jambalaya, everything looked great and well-priced.  But would it taste great? Mmmmm is for M Grill

M, please!

Thanks to @DanJacobs81 for the guest blog.  Follow him today!

Meat is a religion, and M Grill in Koreatown is the reason I’m anti-Semitic against vegetarians.

A friend of mine had an e-mailed discount from Yelp.com, and with this firmly entrenched in his soon-to-smell-like-meat hands, I went with him and another friend to the aforementioned all-you-can-eat Brazilian churrascaria. Authentic Brazilian food in K-Town? This I had to see taste. Continue Reading»

Fast Foodery at Ono Hawaiian BBQ

October 6th, 2010 Tweet Facebook Digg Stumble Reddit

Please don't lay on that cabbage.

Growing up, fast food either meant burgers or Taco Bell.  For the most part, this is still true, but more and more I find that not only has the quality of fast food improved, but so has the variety.  Chains like Yoshinoya and Jollibee are good examples of this, and recently I experienced another: Ono Hawaiian BBQ.  The menu has a lot of Asian-inspired dishes and some things that looked distinctly Hawaiian, but all in the setting of a fast food joint with fast food prices.  My eyes quickly found their $5.00 meal special, that included a choice of four different dishes, which were Lemon Chicken, Chicken Katsu, Kalbi Short Ribs and Hawaiian BBQ Beef. Finding Kansas City BBQ in LA

WTF Pickles!

A lot of places are known to have delicious BBQ.  St. Louis and Memphis are both huge and Texas always claims to be the best, but I have always felt best about Kansas City BBQ.  This affinity probably goes back to the only time I went to Kansas City and got some Gates Bar-B-Q in my pre-meat blog days.  It was so good I left Kansas City with my very own bottle of sauce.  When I started working in North Hollywood, I noticed a place called The Kansas City BBQ Company nearby, but having heard nothing about it I sort of forgot about it. But recently a co-worker claimed it was really good, so an outing was planned and we all took a stroll down Magnolia to see how good Kansas City could taste in North Hollywood. Continue Reading»

Meat Madness at Manna

Korean latkes.

I think we can all agree that there are not enough places in the world that offer unlimited food.  And the places that do are usually pretty bogged down by endless salad bars and other assorted vegetables.  Manna Korean BBQ in Culver City is not one of those places.  Instead of concentrating on veggies, they have decided to concentrate on meats.  For only 16.99, you get all you can eat meats.  And these aren’t just generic grade D meats, these are a collection of short rib, brisket, pork belly, pork, chicken, spicy chicken and beef. Finger Lickin’ at JR’s BBQ

February 17th, 2010 Tweet Facebook Digg Stumble Reddit

Gimme some bone.

JR’s BBQ sits in a little nondescript building at the corner of La Cienega and Fairfax in Culver City.  Despite the many many times I’ve driven by there, I still had no idea the place existed until a buddy of mine suggested we check it out.  Once I found the place, we went inside and found an old timey place with a bunch of stools set up and a little dining area in the back with mismatched tablecloths, chairs and tables.  It was actually pretty cool to be in a place that seemingly cared a lot more about their food than the scene it would be eaten in.  We were the only people there, so we took our seats in the dining room and started looking at the menu. Loading up on Dough at CPK

Bread!

A long time ago, I tried out the BBQ Chicken Pizza from California Pizza Kitchen (CPK).  By this time, the restaurant was in Michigan everyone had been raving about it.  I tasted it was really disappointed.  Using BBQ sauce instead of tomato sauce disturbed me, and the onions hidden in the cheese made it even worse.  Later on, I tried many different pizzas from CPK and was pleased.  Yet, since moving to California, I have had very little, if any contact with CPK.  Recently, though, I had the chance for a revisit to their Beverly Hills location and decided to once again try out their BBQ Chicken Pizza.  But this time, I was prepared. Subpar-BQ at Barbie’s Q

January 25th, 2010 Tweet Facebook Digg Stumble Reddit

The Q stands for quixotic.

So for my final truck on the Haiti Fundraiser day, I decided to visit an old truck that I still haven’t gotten the chance to try out.  This was Barbie’s Q, “A Rollin’ BBQ Joint.”  The idea of getting BBQ from a truck has always sounded kind of suspect, but my buddy told me it was pretty good, so I trusted him.  I also trusted the looks of the man taking orders outside the truck that looked like he had just walked out of a Willie Nelson concert or a shootout at the OK Corral.  Or both. Getting Boolish at the Miracle Mile

January 7th, 2010 Tweet Facebook Digg Stumble Reddit

Not just an imitator.

As a child, going to a food court to eat was just about the greatest thing to do.  I could get fries with a taco, maybe throw a slice of pizza on there and top it all off with a root beer float.  Sure, it wasn’t a healthy place, but I was a growing boy.  Most food courts have lost their allure since then, but the new food truck craze has given my old love of food courts a grown-up spin.  Apparently the Miracle Mile loads up with food trucks during lunch, so when I was finally able to get there, I wanted to take advantage.  A few trucks that I had been to before were there, along with a regular taco truck that was either reaping the benefits of these newbies or losing a lot of business to shiny and newer trucks.  For the first part of my modern food court meal, I decided to try out Bool BBQ.

Pre-Thanksgiving Turkey with Gayle’s BBQ

Chipotle

Although Thanksgiving is still a couple of days away, I’m already hungry for some Turkey.  Luckily, Gayle’s BBQ sent me some of her BBQ sauces and a recipe for some turkey meatballs for free.  Since I’m more of an eater than a cooker, I left my girlfriend to follow the recipe and make me some meatballs. Beer Me Some Breckenridge Agave Wheat

The taste of skiing?

Colorado is definitely a beer state, and not just because Coors comes from the Rocky Mountain State.  No, it is also home to New Belgium (of Fat Tire fame) and seemingly countless other micro and craft breweries.  While in Breckenridge for a ski weekend, I decided I had to at least try one of these, and because it turned out to be the only one available at dinner, my choice happened to come from the creatively named Breckenridge Brewery.  The brewery, by the way, is actually no longer in Breckenridge, having expanded and moved to Denver in 1992.
