A Shiny Shiny Beacon

A beacon of hope.

On a cold, wet afternoon, I was hankering for some lunch when I saw a beacon of hope in Culver City.  No, not just any beacon, but a restaurant that was actually called Beacon.  This name was just so similar to bacon that I had to try it out.  Well, also I had heard some pretty good things about the place.  The lunchtime crowd was pretty big, but my girlfriend and I still found a table pretty easily.  Beacon was an interesting blend of Asian and American fusion, featuring dishes like “black” edamame (which sounds like an even scarier version than regular edamame) and Miso Braised Short Ribs.  By far the most confusing part of the menu was figuring out which dishes were salads and which were sandwiches, since they both fell under the header of “Salads and Sandwiches.”

Like Bacon at Pico Kosher Deli

February 24th, 2010 Tweet Facebook Digg Stumble Reddit

Looks like a bacon burger.

When some Kosher cousins of mine came to visit LA, it was time for me to pay another visit to Pico and Robertson, also known as Little Israel.  Once again, it would have been a waste to go to a Kosher place on the dairy end of the spectrum, so we went to Pico Kosher Deli to get some meat going.  Sometimes it’s hard for me to get meat without topping it with a cheese of some sort, but the deli had something interesting to top their meat, while still staying Kosher.

An Amusingly Tasty Burger at Beechwood

February 12th, 2010 Tweet Facebook Digg Stumble Reddit

Thank you for being tasty.

Heading into Beechwood, I was feeling a bit skeptical.  Bars in Venice can tend to be a bit trendy, especially the food-serving kind.  Once inside, part of my skepticism was confirmed, with strangely shaped lounge seats and a half hour wait even though we had reservations.  Oh well, at least they had a pretty sweet beer menu so I could have a little something to drink while waiting.  They had a pretty cool-looking wheat beer called Moosbacher from Germany.  Since I like moose and wheat, I figured these would outweigh my distaste for Germany, and I was right.  It was quite good and came in a huge bottle.

Memories of the Elephant Bar

February 5th, 2010 Tweet Facebook Digg Stumble Reddit

Made with real elephant. Wait. No.

As a child of 13, I went to the Elephant Bar in Palm Desert and loved the perpetually moving straw fans on the ceiling.  Of course, that was all it took for me to like a restaurant at the age of 13.  Now things are a little different.  Those fans still cater to my easily distracted mind, but my taste buds require something more.  A quick look at the menu made me feel like the Elephant Bar was suffering from mild schizophrenia.  While most of the menu was filled with American fare, for some reason a whole page was devoted to Asian stir-fry-esque meals.  This threw me off and made me feel like this place wasn’t made for Asian food.  I flipped back to the American comfort zone and found what I wanted.

Half Off at Luna Park

January 21st, 2010 Tweet Facebook Digg Stumble Reddit

Three little piggies.

Apparently Henry’s Hat isn’t the only place that sends out half-price coupons.  Luna Park, part of the same family with Henry’s Hat, also partakes in these amazing deals.  So the last time Luna Park sent out an offer, we headed out to the Miracle Mile area to check out what Luna Park was all about.

The first thing I noticed on their menu was they had a beer called Skyscraper Bulldozer Honeyweizen.  I was so excited to see this, since my favorite beer is Leinenkugel’s Honey Weiss, so I made sure to order this immediately.  When I drank it, I was pretty happy.  It’s a bit sweeter and thicker than Honey Weiss, but definitely a good choice since I can’t get that beer out here.  Unfortunately, this is the only place I’ve ever seen that beer, so hopefully I’ll be able to find it again sometime.

A Biblical Valentine

Let's get biblical.

This year I got biblical for Valentine’s Day.  No, not like that you sicko.  Instead of having a boring, fancy meal with my girlfriend, we decided to get cooking.  And not just any kind of cooking, we decided to use Lobel’s Meat Bible, which was sent to me by Chronicle Books a few months ago for free.  I knew this book would be incredible just based on the cover, but the back cover really sealed the deal for me because it says, “Armed with Lobel’s Meat Bible, carnivores will find themselves with more delectable meaty choices than ever before.”  Mmmm meaty choices.
