The Detroit area is populated with some pretty amazing Middle Eastern food. This is due, of course, to the high population of people from that region. Thus, I operate under the impression that you can’t go wrong with any place because of the big time competition. So when I stepped into Shawarma Kingdom in Birmingham, I walked in with expectations.
I ordered a Chicken Shawarma sandwich without pickles and with some fries on the side. For a lunch special, it was pretty cheap and I was pretty excited to try it out.
Unfortunately, my wish to eat without pickles was taken from me not once, but twice. First, the wrap came with pickles inside. I sent it back immediately and was then presented with a pita with shawarma with no pickles inside, but with a spear and a couple slices of tomato on the plate next to it. This was perplexing, but could potentially be forgotten for a good shawarma.
Sadly this was not the case. The chicken was alright, but sometimes too chewy, while there was little to no flavor in each bite from either the chicken itself or the sauce. In fact, there was almost no sauce until the last bite when I got a kick of garlic. I will admit that the fries were actually quite good, but damn if I wasn’t disappointed by everything else.
