Carnivorous Eating at Hough’s

Ugh pink stuff.
Ugh pink stuff.

Hough’s in Greenfield (pronounced huff’s for all yinz amateurs) is a pretty special place. In addition to having an awesome beer selection, they have a backroom that can be used to brew your own beer. Because, you know, hundreds of beers just aren’t enough. Yet, as much as I love beer, this is a meaty food blog, so let’s get down to the meat of the matter. Hough’s food menu is pretty short, mostly filled with burgers and sandwiches, and this is just fine by me. My group of friends gave me mixed reviews of their Smoked Reuben, so I took the burger route.

And that route let me to a place that seemed mighty comfortable: The Carnivore. This burger was topped with bacon, pulled pork, cheddar, lemon mayo and strangely some out of place lettuce, tomato and onion. I ordered without those things that make a carnivore burger herbivorous, asked for medium rare and chose tots over fries for my side. When it arrived, I was disappointed to find some pickled pink vegetable draped over my burger and immediately removed it. What remained was certainly carnivorous, but also quite disappointing. The pulled pork seemed an afterthought. The bacon had been pushed to one side and needed reorganizing. And, the burger patty itself was just kind of eh and overcooked. Tots are always a winner, but I think it’s easier to find the Higgs-Boson than to screw up tots.

So, having had The Carnivore, I can safely say you don’t have to. Stick to beers or find something else on the menu and you’ll likely leave more satisfied than me.
