Is there any meat in there?

Is there any meat in that mess?

A few years ago, Subway changed the name of the “Meatball” sub to the “Meatball Marinara.”  I’m not sure why this particular change occurred.  Maybe it was to placate healthy people who would be more attracted to the word “marinara.”  I never felt this was a particularly bad thing, after all, rebranding to increase sales is a huge component of our capitalistic system.

That all changed when I went to the Subway at Pico and La Cienega.  I ordered a Meatball Marinara sub on Italian herbs and cheese bread, with provolone and parmesan cheese.  It seemed like such a great idea, until I started watching the man behind the counter make my subHe started by fishing out a few meatballs, then doused my sandwich in marinara sauce as if there was some sort of fire.  I asked to get my sub toasted in the hopes that some of the sauce would burn off.  I was wrong.  It was soggy, saucy, and more soggy.

When I did happen upon a meatball within my sandwich, I was filled with utter delight, but it was short-lived as almost every other bite was filled with an overwhelming mouthful of marinara sauce.

    Apparently, Subway is the lowest-priced, brand-name franchise one can invest in, and the food quality and sandwich builds routinely prove it. They dole out meatballs as though they were black truffles, and I’m sure the annoying cheese-slices-cut-in-half thing saves them mad money – at your taste buds’ expense. What? You want two more cheese triangles? That’ll cost ya extra…

    You can ask for less sauce! It is the secret to a delicious yet not mushy meatball sandwich! PS have them toast the bread BEFORE you get the stuff in also.

Going Global at Plan Check

Fries of the world.

A couple of weeks ago, The Backyard Bite invited me to The Burger Culture Clash, sponsored by Stussy (which apparently still exists) and Plan Check. Plan Check, by the way, is a sort of new (since February) restaurant in West LA with Chef Ernesto Uchimura of Umami Burger fame. As my love of burgers, especially those of the umami variety, I jumped at the opportunity.

Although I arrived alone, I was not the only lone eater. Just next to where I was seated, I met e*star LA and we decided to share a meal called loneliness, because it’s better than eating alone. We made quick friends over our respective blogs and Midwestern roots, then got to work at dissecting the special menu, which Plan Check will be featuring for the next month if anything tickles your fancy.
