The Unvegan supports Haiti. With food!
As everyone knows, almost two weeks ago, Haiti was hit with a devastating earthquake. Other than donating by text message or contributing in other small ways, a bunch of the food trucks of LA banded together for a huge fundraiser at T-Lofts in West LA. So shiny and like-new
The highly anticipated Grilled Cheese Truck finally rolled into town tonight and due to my frightening obsession with cheese, I made sure to greet the truck. In the tradition of other great ks before it, the unveiling took place at The Brig on Abbot Kinney. I arrived 15 minutes before the scheduled 8:00 start time and was shocked to find the parking lot at The Brig empty except for the shiny orange truck. Apparently, I was to be the first in line! NBC has chosen to ban the PETA commercial above from the Super Bowl because of how sexually charged it is. Kudos to NBC for showing the vegetarians who the boss is. But while I completely agree with banning the commercial, I disagree with the reasoning behind it. In the commercial, beautiful women in skimpy outfits can be seen sharing their screen time with vegetables, often performing sexually driven acts with them, ie. licking a pumpkin, rubbing breasts with asparagus.
To start off, I want to say that I am in no way against these women and their performances, for while I am against eating vegetables, I can completely see the merit in using vegetables in these forms. Also, I really have a hard time picturing that one girl using a steak instead of broccoli to…achem…help herself.

Future Foodies!
HYPE is a non-profit organization that works directly with low-income middle schoolers and their teachers to provide students with the guidance and resources needed to qualify for admission and succeed at top private schools in the Los Angeles area. We provide our students with engaging and unfamiliar experiences to broaden their horizons. A large part of building this cultural capital is by having our students try a wide variety of new foods. This pushes our students outside of their comfort zones and encourages them to take risks in a fun (and tasty!) way. Last summer, our students tried Ethiopian food, sushi, Korean BBQ, deli, and schwarma, just to provide some examples.
We want your help, Unvegan fans, to increase our students’ knowledge about the world around them by enhancing their culinary experiences. We greatly appreciate your support to provide a meal to our group of 15. With your donation, you will be opening delicious doors for an amazing group of students!
