In Foreign Territory at Mofongos

June 7th, 2011 Tweet Facebook Digg Stumble Reddit

So that's what Puerto Rico tastes like.

Once upon a time, a friend of mine hooked up with a Puerto Rican lady.  Afterwards, he proclaimed that he was “in foreign territory…literally.”  Unfortunately, as an American he failed to realize that he was not in foreign territory at all.  At least not since 1898 when the US won the Spanish-American War.  Similarly, Puerto Rican food is so different from other regional American food that it almost feels like foreign territory, but after eating Mofongos in North Hollywood I realized this is some regional food I’d like to see more often. A Simpler Meal at Tacomiendo

March 29th, 2011 Tweet Facebook Digg Stumble Reddit

Take it easy there.

On a funky little corner in Culver City, there resides a hole-in-the-wall Mexican joint called Tacomiendo.  I originally read about them a long time ago because they served good food at cheap prices.  Finally, after residing on my to-eat list for so long, I got around to taking a ride out to try them out.  Not terribly hungry for this dinner hour, I skipped over the big ticket items like burritos and tortas.  Instead, I went with their namesake, a taco. A Quickie Dinner at Daily Grill

More like Multi-Daily Grill

On our way out of town via the Bob Hope Airport in Burbank, we were in need of a convenient place for a bite to eat.  Across the street from the airport, we found the Daily Grill, an mid-level restaurant chain for American food that can found throughout California and a little beyond.  As we needed to catch a flight, there was little time to dilly dally and I quickly scanned the menu and found their Penne Pasta with Chicken. Yargh! at the Blue Bayou

February 2nd, 2011 Tweet Facebook Digg Stumble Reddit

Gumbo wirh Dumbo.

If you’ve ever ridden the Pirates of the Caribbean at Disneyland, you may have noticed the restaurant next to the beginning of the ride, where diners ignore the people in pirate boats heading towards certain pirate doom.  On my last trip to the happiest place on earth, I found myself not in one of those boats, but instead as one of those bystanders in the restaurant called Blue Bayou.  In a land of ceaseless twilight, Blue Bayou can be found in the French District of Disneyland and serves up New Orleans-style food. Getting Stuffed at Spice Market Buffet

January 13th, 2011 Tweet Facebook Digg Stumble Reddit

Not understanding the relation.

In my continuing quest to find the greatest buffet in Las Vegas (and eventually the world!), I may have found one to stand toe to toe with Rio’s Carnival World Buffet.  Situated in Planet Hollywood, the Spice Market Buffet doesn’t fit into the Hollywood theme, at least in name.  It also doesn’t bear any resemblance to a Spice Market.  Nonetheless, it does use spices and the walls are adorned with food-related movie posters like Attack of the Killer Tomatoes! and Breakfast at Tiffany’s (two very similar movies).  The lunch buffet cost 25 bucks, but as soon as I looked around, I knew it was going to be well worth the price. A Green Torta at Pink Taco

December 3rd, 2010 Tweet Facebook Digg Stumble Reddit

Neither pink nor taco.

The name Pink Taco is something of a shock.  You’d think you were walking into a strip club or something, but lo and behold, you end up walking into a restaurant.  The Pink Taco in LA is at the Century City mall and although it’s not part of their glorious food court, it was still a place worth checking out.  As you would expect, once you realize Pink Taco is actually a restaurant, the place serves up Mexican food in a trendy way. Meating Out at Fogo de Chao

October 21st, 2010 Tweet Facebook Digg Stumble Reddit

This is a calling card to unvegans the world over.

Ever since beginning my meat blog, Fogo de Chao in Beverly Hills has been in my sights.  I’ve eaten Brazilian food before, but I have been told over and over again that Fogo is the king of meatiness.  But it’s expensive.  Like a fixed price of $56.50 expensive.  But when Restaurant Week comes to town, that ridicu-price drops down to a more reasonable $44 bucks, including dessert.  So for my first Fogo experience, I made sure to go during Restaurant Week and was amazed with what that price bought me. Creative Naming at Hoagies and Wings

August 30th, 2010 Tweet Facebook Digg Stumble Reddit

I like my wings glistening.

As a man spoiled by Buffalo Wild Wings, it is often difficult to try out new wing places.  But going to a place where 50% of the name is Wings and the other 50% is Hoagies seems like a recipe for success.  So even if Hoagies and Wings isn’t the most creatively named restaurant, it certainly makes clear what you will be offered.  To be fair, they do offer some burgers and sides, but other than that, the menu is pretty much limited to the name. Cultural Devolution at Mao’s Kitchen

August 27th, 2010 Tweet Facebook Digg Stumble Reddit

Will this improve my vision?

After what feels like years of hearing about the deliciousness that dwells within Mao’s Kitchen in Venice, I finally found myself an opportunity to try the place out.  A big perk of the place was that it was BYO, so I grabbed a sixer of tasty beer and brought it along to see if Mao’s could really be good Chinese food.  Before delving into the meal itself, let’s take a moment to consider the name of Mao’s Kitchen.  Honestly, I’m not so sure I would want to eat whatever Mao would have served.  Most likely it would have involved mass atrocities and a side of untimely death.  Cultural faux pas aside, I was still drawn in by their reputation for culinary goodness. Chicken in The Kitchen

August 9th, 2010 Tweet Facebook Digg Stumble Reddit

Ahh tomato.

After a few days of burgers and wings, I decided I needed to have a meal kind of on the light side.  To accomplish this, my buddy and I went to The Kitchen in Silverlake.  The exterior of the place has a pretty cool mural and the interior has a nice vibe that is neither upscale, downscale or hipster.  Basically, it’s the kind of place that should be in every neighborhood.  At least by the looks.  The menu was pretty simple and although their cheeseburger was tempting, I forced myself to order some chicken. UNVEGAN FANS: HELP STUDENTS LEARN ABOUT DELICIOUS FOOD!

Future Foodies!

HYPE is a non-profit organization that works directly with low-income middle schoolers and their teachers to provide students with the guidance and resources needed to qualify for admission and succeed at top private schools in the Los Angeles area. We provide our students with engaging and unfamiliar experiences to broaden their horizons. A large part of building this cultural capital is by having our students try a wide variety of new foods. This pushes our students outside of their comfort zones and encourages them to take risks in a fun (and tasty!) way. Last summer, our students tried Ethiopian food, sushi, Korean BBQ, deli, and schwarma, just to provide some examples.

We want your help, Unvegan fans, to increase our students’ knowledge about the world around them by enhancing their culinary experiences. We greatly appreciate your support to provide a meal to our group of 15. With your donation, you will be opening delicious doors for an amazing group of students!
