Going to Buffalo with Godfather’s Pizza

October 17th, 2011 Tweet Facebook Digg Stumble Reddit

So swirly!

Many months ago, someone was telling me about a delicious pizza chain from the Midwest called Godfather’s.  Being from the Midwest, I was a bit surprised until he told me it was from that other Midwest.  You know, like Kansas and stuff.  Then Godfather’s started getting a lot more attention because of some dude named Herman Cain that wants to be President.  So when I ordered some pizza delivery from a place called Godfather’s that recently appeared in Palms, I was thinking this was one and the same as the fabled Godfather’s I had heard so much about.  I was wrong, for the first time. Two Boots Pizza for the Soul

September 27th, 2011 Tweet Facebook Digg Stumble Reddit

So bright and colory. I must go there!

As I walked towards The Echo in Echo Park for a night of dancing to soul music, I passed a little joint called Two Boots Pizza and just knew that by the time the night had ended their pizza would make its way into my extensive digestive system.  So when the wee hours of the morning found me stepping out of The Echo, I stepped right into Two Boots and got a looksie at what they had to offer.  Although they sold whole pies, a quick look at their slices told me I would be ordering by the slice.  These slices were some of the most unique I had seen in a long time, perhaps in forever. Stumbling Upon Giovanni’s Trattoria

Getting personal with meatballs.

On a quest for Indian food, we found ourselves staring at a vegetarian restaurant on Venice that shall remain nameless.  Realizing we had made a huge mistake, we went to the next-closest Indian place, just down the street, but for some reason it was closed on a Tuesday night at 7:30.  Poor business tactics, but it would prove to be a blessing in disguise.  For although the Indian place was closed, we realized we were standing in a strange little corner strip mall in Culver City with restaurants serving Japanese, Mexican, Italian and Thai food, in addition to Indian.  Presented with such choices, we opted to check out the Italian place, called Giovanni’s Trattoria and crossed our fingers in the hopes that it would be any good. Sketching Out at Hollywood Pies

September 20th, 2011 Tweet Facebook Digg Stumble Reddit

Best storefront ever.

You make a call and show up in a back alley 45 minutes later.  When you arrive, your guy comes out carrying about five pounds worth.  You hand him your cash, then take your purchase wherever you want and inhale it.  If this sounds like a drug deal to you, get your mind out of the gutter.  Unless your drug is pizza, in which case you should head to this back alley in West Hollywood immediately.  This is the way it works for Hollywood Pies, the sketchiest pizza place in LA you’ve never been to.  You may have eaten their pizza, and you may have even picked up their pizza, but you have never been there because there is no “there.” Continue Reading»

Parking at Garage Pizza

September 1st, 2011 Tweet Facebook Digg Stumble Reddit

Where happy hour becomes meaty hour.

What’s the first thing you think about when someone tells you you’re going to a place called Garage Pizza? Flying unicorns with laser beam eyes? Doing the backstroke through a sea of sour patch gummy worms? No, you think of pizza found down a shady back alley with a haggard old man selling you a grimy looking slice of pizza out of a homemade oven built from used industrial parts. Thankfully none of those are true (despite the fact that flying unicorns with laser beam eyes are pretty sweet and totally real) and I can happily say that Garage Pizza is a legitimate, mostly haggard-free, pizza establishment.

Hustling Bricks

August 31st, 2011 Tweet Facebook Digg Stumble Reddit

I prefer my bricks customized. Also my mortar.

Given that you are taking the time to read this food post on this meat blog, I’m going to assume that you enjoy eating delicious meals with great company. We all have friends and family members with whom it is an absolute pleasure to share great meals and last night I had the special opportunity to do just that.

My friend Raffi and I bond greatly over very important things like food and football. Last night, he, his co-worker, and I went to a pizza restaurant in Chicago called Bricks. Bricks is located on a stretch on Lincoln Ave. with few other businesses and, as opposed to having a window-front, simply has an arched red awning over a staircase that leads down to the restaurant. Raffi and I are firm believers that you can judge a restaurant by its cover and even though the outside of Bricks is inconspicuous, it calls out at you and makes you think and/or say, “DAMN, this place is going to be GREAT!” Continue Reading»

The Scoop About The Coop

July 20th, 2011 Tweet Facebook Digg Stumble Reddit

Coop or Co-op?

If you saw a pizza place on a corner in LA called The Coop, would you think it was pronounced like scoop without the s or more like co-op?  I’m leaning towards co-op, and it probably has something to do with the medical marijuana dispensary, Kind for Cures (KFC), across the street.  Besides, what is a coop anyway?  Pronunciations aside, I knew The Coop had pizza, and supposedly it was pretty good, so while my buddy and I’s ladies were eating something vegetable-like, we ordered some Coop. It’s Not Digiorno, It’s Sarpino’s Delivery

Gross, mushrooms on a box?!

This guest blog comes courtesy of @RGSpiegel.  He blogs sports too.

Perhaps one of the most uniquely puzzling marketing campaigns of the last year has been that of Domino’s Pizza. In extolling the virtues of their “new recipe” pizza and remarking on how much it has improved, Domino’s is tacitly admitting that their old pizza was not, for lack of better words, particularly good. Given that we were marketed to relentlessly by Domino’s back when their pizza was “not particularly good,” why should we give our valuable pizza dollars to them now? Even with their new recipe, Domino’s is only marginally better than upper tier oven pizzas. The answer, though, lies in their prices. Their special of three medium pizzas for $5.99 each is unmatched, right? Not so fast. Continue Reading»

Living Large at Larchmont Wine & Cheese

June 21st, 2011 Tweet Facebook Digg Stumble Reddit

Sandwichy bliss.

The little area known as Larchmont in the middle of Los Angeles is LA’s version of Main Street America.  Populated mostly by mom and pop shops, it features a few chains and also its fair share of shuttered establishments.  In the middle of this strip of Americana resides Larchmont Village Wine, Spirits & Cheese.  Though the place certainly has its fair share of wines, spirits and cheeses, the main draw is the sandwiches.  The long, yet swiftly moving line is a testament to these sandwiches.  They offer only seven select sandwiches and not one of them is extravagant. Por Ti Funghi, Volare

Hole in the wall?

While in San Diego with a couple of runners the night before the Rock and Roll Marathon, we needed some carbs.  I wasn’t running, but I am never one to turn down a carbo-load.  Knowing nothing of Italian food in San Diego and not really wanting to go to Olive Garden (no offense to the Garden, but we wanted to support something local), we turned to Urban Spoon.  Yes, there’s an app for that.  This directed us to Volare, a sort of whole in the wall in a sort of sketchy part of town.  It looked perfect. Going Global at Plan Check

Fries of the world.

A couple of weeks ago, The Backyard Bite invited me to The Burger Culture Clash, sponsored by Stussy (which apparently still exists) and Plan Check. Plan Check, by the way, is a sort of new (since February) restaurant in West LA with Chef Ernesto Uchimura of Umami Burger fame. As my love of burgers, especially those of the umami variety, I jumped at the opportunity.

Although I arrived alone, I was not the only lone eater. Just next to where I was seated, I met e*star LA and we decided to share a meal called loneliness, because it’s better than eating alone. We made quick friends over our respective blogs and Midwestern roots, then got to work at dissecting the special menu, which Plan Check will be featuring for the next month if anything tickles your fancy.
