Eating CreativEats

From a truck!
From a truck!

It has been an admittedly long time since I have eaten from a food truck, let alone one in LA. Yet, while the fad has ended, there are still plenty of food trucks to chow down with as the truck still offers a low-cost entry into food-slinging. One such truck goes by the name of CreativEats and breaks essentially all (two) rules I thought necessary for a food truck’s survival.

The Hat Full of Pastrami

Any fries there?
Any fries there?

The Hat is one of those local LA fast food spots that has been around forever and seems to be in no rush to change. It has “World Famous Pastrami,” but is not limited to just one meat, because the place also serves burgers, roast beef dip and crazy big portions of sides. I mean crazy. Just look at that order of chili cheese fries on the left and try to comprehend how small the individual fries look.

Curry and Curry at Nine and Nine

A special lunch.
A special lunch.

Just off the main drag of South Lake in Pasadena is a little Thai spot that goes by the name Nine and Nine. What the name means is lost to me, but what wasn’t lost to me was their lunch specials for $7.50, which captivated me as I browsed the menu. Like most Thai places, the lunch specials menu was a small fraction of the whole, but it had curry and that’s all a guy like me could ask for.

A Retreat to Cliff’s Edge

Millions of peaches...
Millions of peaches…

When you need to get away from it all (say from a 3 month old child and the busy streets of LA), Cliff’s Edge in Silverlake is actually a pretty good way to do it. You see, just off of busy Sunset Blvd, Cliff’s Edge feels like it might as well be Middle Earth. There’s a real tree growing right in the middle of the place and the whole place really does feel like an earthly Lothlorien. There was no Lembas bread to eat, but there was plenty to be found.

Burger Utopia at Eden Burger Bar (RELOCATED)

Holy cows.
Holy cows.

EDIT: Eden Burger Bar has moved (still in Glendale) and also changed its name to Eden on Brand. Hopefully it’s just as good.

I’ve been meaning to get to Eden Burger Bar for a long time. Yet, Glendale is really goddamn far when you live in Culver City or, well, Pittsburgh. But living in Pasadena and making regular trips to Bob Hope’s airport? That’s a perfect recipe for stopping in for a burger in a place synonymous with paradise.

Housing Some Dog Haus

Stray dogs.
Stray dogs.

Around the LA area and the surrounding region is a small group of hot dog spots called Dog Haus. Despite the fact that this seems to portray some sort of Germanic hot dog spot, it’s really just a place for some creative hot dogs and burgers. And while the burgers were actually looking mighty fine, I just had to stick with the hot dog part of the menu.

KK’s at Lo-Lo’s Chicken and Waffles

Exactly as it should be.
Exactly as it should be.

Chicken and Waffles isn’t just for Roscoe’s. In fact, in the Phoenix area it’s pretty much synonymous with Lo-Lo’s. Lo-Lo’s House of Chicken and Waffles, that is. For a place with “Hood Classics” as a section of the menu, Lo-Lo’s is surprisingly nice and clean inside, compared to the old beat up diner style of Roscoe’s. Nonetheless, there was plenty on the menu calling my name.

Tri Tip at Twisted Grove

Untwisted beef.
Untwisted beef.

On a quest for a good burger I found myself at Twisted Grove in Scottsdale speaking with a hostess. She said something about the fact that they did not have a burger to speak of. Yet, as I began to walk to the exit, she said they did have an amazing tri tip sandwich. Like any good unvegan, I turned back around and took a seat at an open table.

Pretty Good Microbrew and Grill

Oh so gritty.
Oh so gritty.

Good Microbrew and Grill in Silverlake is a bit presumptuous. First, with a name like that there is an implication that the place is good. Then it makes you think they make their own brews. The grill part I have no qualms with. Presumptuous or not, I decided to make the place my brunch destination on one fine Saturday.
