Ditch Digging at Pearl Street Brewery

Tapping it.
Tapping it.

Downtown Buffalo hosts all sorts of fun events during the summer and so far none more fun than Thursdays at Canalside. But right by Canalside is place called Pearl Street Grill & Brewery, which is supposed to have some good things to eat and drink. As a man who loves brewery food, I was excited at the prospect of Pearl Street and after ordering one of their seasonal beers I took a gander at their menu.

Being a Real American at Grover’s

Very presidential.
Very presidential.

On this day, it is customary to feel patriotic. After all, it is the day that our forefathers flipped the bird across the pond and said “We’re doing things our way from now on.” While we can’t exactly be patriotic in the same way anymore, there are still things we can do, as real Americans, to carry on the American dream. One (and probably the best) of these things is that we can sit in a former president’s hunting shack and eat huge burgers. That’s where Grover’s comes in.

Grover’s was supposedly once Grover Cleveland’s hunting shack (which is actually plausible because the guy was once the mayor of Buffalo). It’s over in East Amherst and looks a lot more like a dive bar now than a hunting shack. And the burgers at Grover’s are all-American. Some display excess, some display freedom and some both. Like when I showed up and found out that the burger of the week did not have grilled cheese buns, they actually made one for me anyway. What is the best ammo for your firearm? Meaty Hash at Savory’s

So savory.
So savory.

In a rare move since moving to Western New York for the summer, I consulted the interwebs to grab a meal at the last-minute. By this I mean that nearly every other spot I’ve hit up so far has been on recommendation from an actual human. On this occasion the interwebs sent me to Savory’s in Hamburg for brunch. We were seated immediately, but not before catching a glimpse of the specials.

Crossing Borders at Saigon Bangkok

The way of the Bangkok.
The way of the Bangkok.

After crossing the border back into the good old USA from Canada, it was time to visit a border-crossing restaurant – namely Saigon Bangkok (the borders being Vietnam and Thailand, which of course don’t even border each other). Where many Asian restaurants purport to be one thing while offering additional options, Saigon Bangkok unabashedly offers multiple options and keeps them limited to just that. While I’m a fan of both cuisines, in this case I concentrated all my efforts on Thai.

A Taste of Niagara-on-the-Lake (CLOSED)

Solid name.
Good thing it’s not called Size.

On a sojourn to Niagara-on-the-Lake for a day of bike riding and wine drinking, the wife and I found ourselves in need of a quick bite to eat. Usually this would have involved much research from a meat blogger like myself, but I was hungry and wine was waiting so we found ourselves in Taste, a little sandwich and salad spot. I was already concerned about my food because the place’s tagline is “The Healthy Option” and we all know that means healthy in the worst possible sense.

Can’t Get Enough of that Wonderful Duff’s

Simply beautiful.
Simply beautiful.

Duff’s Famous Wings may not be the original wings, but they sure do have a reputation. Nearly everyone from the area agrees that Duff’s has earned the distinction of best wings in Buffalo, and after trying out a couple other local wing spots, I felt it was my duty to make my way to Duff’s. There are a few locations around town, and I opted for the one on Orchard Park Road.

Greener Pastures at Lloyd Taco Truck

Tacos and grass.
Tacos and grass.

Even Buffalo has succumbed to the nation-wide food truck craze, one of these going by the name of Lloyd Taco Truck. In fact, this truck seems to be so successful that it has spawned a fleet that even reaches sunny East Aurora. With high expectations, I once again set out far away from the land of Mexico to eat some Mexican food. What I found was a big green truck and a menu that sported some good-looking food if not authentic-looking.

Bacon Meets Wings at Riley Street Station

Such glisten.
Such glisten.

East Aurora definitely has its fair share of bars, after all, what else can you do in the middle of the Western New York winter aside from drinking? One of these is Riley Street Station, which is about as close as I can get to my office and drink. In two near back-to-back visits, I was given the rare chance to judge a restaurant on more than one order that I could claim solely for myself.

Mighty Taco and a Mighty Burrito

Best of both worlds?
Best of both worlds?

In the land of Western New York, a great battle is being waged over Americanized Mexican fast food. In one corner there is Taco Bell, perennial favorite around the country. In the other is Mighty Taco, a local favorite with just about as much connection to Mexico as general stability (read: none). Yet, I knew I had to try it out to see what kind of competition it is to the first love of my life.

Mac and Jerk at Harris Grill

Hush little piggy.
Hush little piggy.

After nearly a year living in Pittsburgh, I assumed that I had eaten all that Shadyside had to offer. Or, at the very least, all that was worth eating. Then came a night at Harris Grill, a spot that I had written off as having just your average bar food without even really giving it a try. Their menu isn’t the most vast, but probably the most creatively written. Some menu items are pretty funny, such as I Can Has Bacon Cheezburgher? and their descriptions get even better.
